MBS Equipment Co. - Screen Lighting Technician Apprenticeship

Tue 19th May 2026

The Screen Lighting Technician Apprenticeship program was launched in 2025 to provide a pathway for new entrants onto one of the highest risk production areas on set.

The apprentices come with a level 2 electrical qualification and spend the first year learning the equipment in one of the employing Rental houses (currently MBS Equipment co. and Sunbelt).

The Apprentices must remain employed through out their course, but are required to work on real productions as additions to the crew in order to gain valuable experience and exposure to life on set. As the rental companies bear the employment cost but no future skill advantage, from training these apprentices for the industry, it has been widely discussed that productions hosting the apprentices should pay the equivalent day rate back to their employers, ensuring there is a steady stream of digitally competent , electrically safe and qualified new lighting electricians for the years to come. Secondment agreements take care of things like insurance liability and other details

The UK's reputation for attracting inward investment is dependent on having skilled crew ,and this is one way productions can be sure of the competency of those on the electrical team they will be employing.
