Imperial War Museums (IWM) has recently launched its Curator Consultancy Service. The service provides curatorial support to film and TV producers looking for expert knowledge and advice to aid the development of their productions.
IWM has a long history of working with film and TV producers and production companies. Recent projects include working with Paramount/Universal to authentically recreate the Cabinet War Rooms for the award-winning picture Darkest Hour, collaborating with Peter Jackson by supplying footage from the archives to create They Shall Not Grow Old which tells the story of what it was like to be a soldier during the First World War and, more recently, advising on Sam Mendes’ epic 1917.
The success of these projects and others has led to the launch of IWM’s Curator Consultancy Service. The service grants access to IWM’s team of expert curators who can navigate the collections and provide contextual information for commercial projects such as feature films, documentaries and consumer products.
IWM is a family of five museums and historic sites covering war and conflict from the First World War to the present day. Founded in the midst of the First World War, IWM’s mission is to preserve and tell the stories of modern-day conflict and its impact on all kinds of people. IWM’s archives contain some 94,000 works of art, 27,000 documents, 23,000 hours of film, 150,000 objects, 34,000 sound objects and 11 million photographs. The Curator Consultancy Service can help to enhance projects, ensure historical accuracy and provide real life stories of those impacted by war to give a deeper understanding of its effect on the world.
The service is subject to availability and rates start at £480 + VAT.

IWM’s five branches (IWM London, IWM North, HMS Belfast, Churchill War Rooms and IWM Duxford) also provide locations for commercial film, TV, photography and creative advertising shoot experiences that engage emotions and tell many different stories.
IWM’s branches have a diverse portfolio of filming spaces, including a wartime bunker, a Second World War battleship, an airfield and two stunning modern museums. On offer are many behind-the-scenes areas and out-buildings, including a former Victorian orphanage, aircraft hangars, former chapels, basements, roofs with views of London, research rooms, archive stacks, and many corridors, fire exits and offices.
