London and LA based film producer Colin Vaines began his career with the trade paper Screen International, before joining the UK’s National Film Development Fund, acting as consultant to parent body British Screen Finance. He joined Lord Puttnam at Columbia Pictures, subsequently becoming head of development for Puttnam’s production company, Enigma, working on films including MEMPHIS BELLE.
He made his debut as a producer with the Emmy-winning TV film A DANGEROUS MAN: LAWRENCE AFTER ARABIA, which introduced Ralph Fiennes in the title role. During this time, Vaines was also artistic director of the Performing Arts Screenwriting Lab in the UK, mentoring Simon Beaufoy, John Hodge, Lee Hall and John Michael McDonagh among others. Vaines supervised production and development for UK lottery franchise The Film Consortium, overseeing movies including HIDEOUS KINKY. He joined New York-based Miramax Films as head of development, becoming Executive Vice-President, European Production and Development. He was co-executive producer of Martin Scorsese’s GANGS OF NEW YORK, and Executive in Charge of Production on Anthony Minghella's COLD MOUNTAIN. He was appointed Executive Vice-President, European Production and Development for The Weinstein Company, where his credits included Anthony Minghella’s BREAKING AND ENTERING.
He joined Graham King’s GK Films as Co-President of Production, and was Executive Producer of THE YOUNG VICTORIA, THE RUM DIARY and LONDON BOULEVARD. Returning to freelance production, he produced Ralph Fiennes' CORIOLANUS, was co-producer of W.E. and co-executive producer of MY WEEK WITH MARILYN. He produced THE MARRIAGE OF REASON & SQUALOR for Sky Arts, executive produced RED DOG: TRUE BLUE, and, with Barbara Broccoli, the Bafta-nominated FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL. Most recently, he was executive producer of the Netflix hit The Unforgivable, starring Sandra Bullock
