Course Overview

This one-day remote course offers a comprehensive introduction to the often-misunderstood areas of visual effects.  The aim is to demystify and help you apply good working practices, alongside your new knowledge, to improve your day-to-day collaboration with, or management of VFX.

 

What does the course cover?

  • Brief history of VFX and the role of the VFX Dept in modern filmmaking.
  • VFX vs SFX - nomenclature and approach. Visible vs invisible VFX.
  • Stages of VFX production and how this sits alongside physical production. The Dept is unique in that it is the 'first in - last out" in the production process.
  • The VFX Process: Script work, breakdowns, and budgeting at each stage.
  • Shoot and physical production: from the team, who does what, equipment and technology required, Splinter unit VFX shooting to VFX integration with the rest of physical production.
  • Editorial & Post: from the Timeline of work and scheduling post-picture lock, to deliverables and wrap.
  • The business part of VFX: from Tax incentives and geo-spend to departmental spend and cost reports & best practice in production.
