The Southampton Film and Television School has 525 students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses delivered by 28 members of staff who are active in their field as industry practitioners, educators, and researchers.
The University strategy - Work Ready, World Ready, Future Ready - shapes the School’s ethos ensuring we are practice-based, industry-facing, research-informed and ready for employment. To those ends we have supported our students and the local creative industries through various projects and partnerships over the years, the longest standing being City Eye’s Southampton Film Week, which we have supported and shaped since its launch 15 years ago.
The industry-facing nature of our courses is evident in our resource investment and illustrated in our television production courses which are ScreenSkills accredited.
The School also runs Solent Productions – our in-house production company – which offers work experience opportunities for students with a range of clients. We collaborate closely with Solent Creatives and Solent Futures (our freelancing agency and careers service) who develop, finance, and lend business support to our indie start-ups and freelancers.
We are also home to the largest CGI & Film Visual Effects event in the region that attracts a range of industry representatives (e.g., ILM, Blue Zoo, Framestore) running talks, surgeries, masterclasses and more. CGFX also embraces our undergraduate animation provision as well as games art/design.
In its various iterations over the years the School has always been shaped by the alignment between strategic directions in the screen industries and our curriculum, which supports our public/civic responsibilities towards screen culture and the economy.
