PGGB Acting CEO Michael Beavan was in Cannes between 15th and 20th May to represent PGGB and support our UK Film & HETV industry.
With many requests from Members and Partners, established and new to meet-up, Michael hosted 34 meetings and attended nine receptions, to make sure that PGGB continues to support all those who would like our help and guidance.
Said Beavan: "The energy and positivity that surrounded Cannes this year was especially rewarding given a backdrop of more challenging news in the industry of late. Our work is built on strong, mutually respectful relationships, nurtured over many decades in our industry and with a willingness to find solutions to build on production, training and development. I have loved each and every conversation I have had this last week, and have taken such hope from the warmth of engagement, sharing of ideas, contacts and collaboration that the festival backdrop has delivered for us all."
One piece of PGGB breaking news at this year's festival is that European media giant Antenna Group has launched Iconic Films, a production and distribution company led by Oscar-winning UK producer and PGGB Member Gareth Ellis-Unwin.
The Athens-based company is preparing to begin production on its first three films this summer. The goal is to expand its output to five to ten feature films annually. These Greek-language productions are designed with strong commercial potential and are intended to reach a wide audience, with plans for theatrical releases.
“We’re creating something similar to Film4 or BBC Films in the UK, where you have the heft of a broadcaster supporting the ambition of a film enterprise,” said Ellis-Unwin. “Greece’s theatrical market is continuing to recover well post-Covid, with a 4% increase in admissions last year, so in a country where there is passion for films and filmmaking, we want to ensure we can deliver a wave of great movies.”
