Christopher Granier-Deferre

Producer

Christopher is a freelance producer with a career spanning over thirty years, five continents and a brief spell in ‘zero G’. He began as a runner, moved through the ranks to first assistant director, then production manager and line-producer before becoming a producer in his own right. His expertise encompasses film and television, from blockbuster studio fare to micro-budget features via factual television. His films have been nominated and/or won awards at the European Film Awards, BAFTAS, BIFAS, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, London, Warsaw, Beijing, and Busan amongst many.

He recently served as Executive Producer overseeing the selection, development and production of the iFeatures slate for Creative England, the BFI and the BBC. The slate included EFA / BIFA winner Lady Macbeth, BAFTA Scotland winner The Levelling, as well as WGGB winner / BAFTA-nominated Apostasy. Sundance winner God’s Own Country and BIFA winner The Last Tree were developed during his tenure in the same round. He executive produced Henry Blake’s debut film County Lines, described by The Times as “uncompromising and searing”, which will be released by the BFI in August following its premiere at the London Film Festival in 2019. He has just completed post-production on The Owners, starring Maisie Williams, Rita Tushingham and Sylvester McCoy, a Wild Bunch / Logical / BlueLight co-production being sold by Versatile Films and XYZ.

Alongside freelance and consultant work, he has run his own production company Poisson Rouge Pictures for the past 20 years. The Anglo-French outfit founded in 1997 has been involved in the development, production or finance of over 40 feature films and television dramas since its inception. The company is among the most experienced co-producers of international feature films in the UK and has additionally provided production support for prestigious filmmakers such as Michael Haneke, Olivier Assayas, and Luca Guadagnino. Christopher’s producer credits include Macao Best Screenplay Winner Scarborough, African Academy Award Winner Gone Too Far! and BIFA-nominated The Hide as well as co-producer credits on Omar Sy local blockbuster Demain Tout Commence and François Ozon’s Angel.

Christopher spent his formative years in the industry working for prestigious Oscar-winning duo Ismail Merchant & James Ivory at Merchant Ivory Productions. He has an MA Distinction in Chinese Studies (Cinema) from SAOS (University of London), is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He is a member of the GB Production Guild and BAFTA, BIFA and EFA; a founding member of AFAR, the French Assistant Director’s Guild; he sits on the board of advisors for the London Comedy Festival (LOCO), the KINO EYES Joint Masters Programme and sits on the selection committee for the prestigious Open Doors Lab & Hub program organised under the auspices of the Locarno Film Festival.
