Training Module PGGB Member Consultation

The Extra Factor: Supporting Artists – Liability and Best Practice Report and subsequent industry wide consultations identified three key recommendations to encourage best practice and legal compliance for productions that use supporting artists and their agencies. One key recommendation is to create a training module for both crew working with supporting artists and those legally responsible for supporting artists on production. There are many different names and terms used for supporting artists such as SA, Extras, Background Artists, and BG. For simplicity, the training module and survey uses the term ‘supporting artists’ or SA for all of these.

With no public training funds available to commission the Training Modules - but with encouragement from ScreenSkills, the PGGB’s business partner Mad Dog 2020 fully funded the initiative. It commissioned two modules - a one day and a half day module. They will be made available free of charge for download and for use by UK training entities who may either adopt them in full or incorporate elements into their own production courses

Working with the PGGB, Mad Dog 2020 and Creative Screen Associates, Giles Barron the highly experienced Assistant Director and PGGB member, was contracted to develop and write the Training Modules and The Extra Factor: Supporting Artists Liability and Best Practice Booklet.

Prior to the launch of the modules Mad Dog 2020 and the PGGB are requesting as many of the PGGB’s membership as possible to read the one day module outline, the script and accompanying presentation to provide independent feedback.. We have posted an anonymous questionnaire online here, which we would be glad if you would complete by 10am on Monday 7 September 2020.

We would like to thank you in advance for your support. Please click on the following links to download the documents:

NOTE:

The Extra Factor: Supporting Artists – Liability and Best Practice Project Brief and Report

Mad Dog 2020 commissioned Creative Screen Associations (CSA) to research and consult with the production industry:

· to assess the current and potential future legal and financial liabilities facing the agencies for supporting artists, the supporting artists themselves, and the production industry for film, TV and commercials

· and to recommend best practice

The final draft of The Extra Factor Supporting Artist Liability and Best Practice Report was delivered in November 2017.
